Driving Locally, Driving Safely

When you are driving around Dublin there are many things you are going to have to think about and consider before you set off on your journey. If you’re on a trip you are very familiar with because you do it a number of times a week such as a drive to work, the school run or to visit friends and family there are some dangers you may not think about because you are so familiar with your route.

There is a strong possibility most of the cars, cyclists and pedestrians are also familiar with the route they are taking. What happens when you become very familiar with something? You start to become complacent.

I’m sure you have all cut corners or come around a bend a little too fast and results in you crossing the middle of the road. Most of the time nothing happens because there is no car there to meet you at that exact time, this then makes you even more complacent as you now think this is perfectly safe because you have never had a problem.

You should be thinking about the danger of meeting somebody on that bend or when turning that blind corner. As a driving instructor in Dublin I see so many potential accidents every day. It seems like some people don’t even realise they are doing the wrong thing.

I urge people to think about how they would drive if, around every bend or corner they would meet a member of their family or a close friend, then you might take more care on the roads.

When you’re driving on roads that you are not familiar with you should still be aware that there will be drivers that will be. That means you should be prepared to meet drivers that might be driving too fast and not holding their proper positions on the road.

You can have drivers that will tailgate you because they want to go faster than the speed limits because they know the roads well and in their minds they feel then can handle anything that comes their way. But this is a false sense of security. One in three accidents on the road happen within 1 km of your home.

This can happen because you have only left the house and you may not be fully tuned to the task in hand, or you may be on your way home and be felling tired and be anxious to get home. This may lead you to become a little careless and leaves you vulnerable to being involved in an accident.

Remember that the speed limits in built up areas such as cities and town will have a 50 km default speed limit. The local authority may apply their own speed limits within the area. These may result in a 30 km speed limit around schools or busy pedestrian areas such as town centres. Or a 60 km speed limit as you leave a residential area and the road may be wider and be less likely to have pedestrians.

If you unsure of a speed limit on a road you should always air on the side of caution. For more information on the speed limits in your local area see Speed limits on roads

When you’re out on the roads, keep yourselves safe…
